Creating Your Own Path: How I Broke Free from Family Cycles — and How You Can Too
When you’re just surviving, it’s hard to believe life can change
There was a time in my life when every day felt the same: heavy, exhausting, and hopeless. I woke up each morning already depleted. Everything felt like an obligation, and nothing brought me joy or even a moment of relief. I couldn’t imagine anything ever feeling different.
I remember driving to work one morning and thinking, I’m not going to survive this. The emotional toll of growing up with a parent who struggled with alcohol and continuing to live with her had caught up to me. My body felt like it was shutting down under the stress, the vigilance, and the constant worry.
That moment scared me. It was my wake-up call. Something had to change—because I truly couldn’t keep living that way.
My First Step Toward Healing: A Support Group Meeting
I didn’t know where to start. I didn’t even know what I needed. But the only thing that came to mind was attending an Al-Anon support group meeting. I had spoken with an interventionist years earlier—back when I still believed I could convince my mom to stop drinking—and she had mentioned support groups. That memory resurfaced at exactly the right time.
Walking into that first meeting didn’t fix everything, but it opened a door. It gave me a sliver of light and an entirely new possibility: maybe there was a different way to live.
The Real Freedom Came from Education
Learning That I Was “Normal”
As I continued attending support group meetings, reading books, and absorbing everything I could about how growing up with an alcoholic parent affects us, something life-changing happened:
I realized I was completely normal.
My emotional reactions, fears, coping mechanisms, and exhaustion made total sense given what I had lived through. I wasn’t broken. I wasn’t weak. And I definitely wasn’t alone.
This was incredibly freeing. I had spent my whole life trying to hide the truth about my mom’s drinking because I felt ashamed. But once I learned how common this experience is worldwide, the shame began to dissolve. I could finally see clearly what I needed to work on and what healing would actually look like.
Getting Clear on What Needed Healing
Understanding the patterns—codependency, hypervigilance, people-pleasing, perfectionism—helped me pinpoint the areas that needed attention. The more I learned, the more empowered I felt. Instead of feeling lost, I finally had a direction.
Breaking the Cycle Isn’t Easy, But It Is Possible
Through therapy, self-care, support groups, and ongoing education, I learned something that changed everything for me:
My life was not predetermined.
I was not stuck in the cycle of the generations before me.
I had the power to create something entirely new.
And I did.
I built a life filled with peace, stability, joy, and love—something I never thought was possible for someone like me. It didn’t happen overnight. But step by step, with the right tools and support, it happened.
And if I can do it, you absolutely can, too.
